The VCU community took to the streets of surrounding neighborhoods to participate in “National Night Out,” an opportunity to band together against crime and drugs and strengthen the relationship between residents and law enforcement agencies.
Block parties, cookouts and other activities connected to National Night Out took place on Aug. 2 between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the Carver, Fan, Jackson Ward, Oregon Hill and the Randolph neighborhoods and in the VCU Health System Purple Emergency Room.
Members of the VCU Neighborhood Team visited all of the gatherings and 22 students volunteered. VCU Police passed out crime prevention materials, KID ID kits and coloring books. McGruff the Crime Dog was also on hand.
This was the 28th National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, and it took place in more than 15,000 communities in the U.S., Canada, U.S. territories and U.S. military bases.
