For nearly two years, Virginia Commonwealth University's Activities Collaboration Committee has been responsible for planning many of VCU's activities, events and programs on campus.

Formed in 2001 to bring different university departments together to efficiently collaborate on the planning of different campus programs, the committee consists of staff representatives who meet monthly to discuss upcoming events that impact student life at VCU.

Some of the committee's past projects include, the Late Night and Weekend Programs for 2002 and the idea to incorporate Rodney the Ram into the different activities such as Homecoming 2003: Lights, Camera, Action. In addition, the committee acts as a planning group for other university programs, such as Welcome Week, Black History Month events and Health Awareness Week.

The committee is made up of representatives from groups that include VCU Athletics; First Year Student Services; Department of Music; Office of Minority Student Affairs; VCU Police; Marketing; Office of Health Promotions; Department of Theatre; VCU Medical Center; University Student Commons & Activities; Department of Dance; Aramark/ Dining Services; Residence Education and Counseling Services.

In addition the Committee has provided an opportunity for the various departments to:

  • Meet and discuss upcoming programs
  • Discuss ways to involve the various departments into existing programs
  • Discuss ways to collaborate and/or combine efforts for multiple programs
  • Meet with various departments to gain input on various programs at one meeting vs. scheduling individual meetings and committees for multiple programs
  • Promote their programs to other departments

Felicia Keelen, associate director for student activities at the University Student Commons, formerly chaired the committee. She recently accepted a position as director of the student union at Northeastern University in Chicago, and the committee will have a temporary chair until Keelen's position is filled.
