Five Virginia Commonwealth University students were selected to take part in this summer’s prestigious Virginia Governor’s Fellows Program, which places outstanding Virginia students and recent graduates in high-level internships in the governor's office and other executive branch agencies.

The fellowships, which began June 6 and end July 31, are available to rising college seniors, graduating college seniors and students enrolled as degree candidates in a graduate or professional school. Qualified applicants must be committed to excellence in academics, demonstrate leadership abilities, and be involved in extracurricular activities and community service.

This year’s Governor’s Fellows from VCU are:

  • Brandon Hatcher, a graduate student in public administration at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, serving in the office of the Secretary of Health and Human Resources
  • Eugene Chigna, a senior political science major in the College of Humanities and Sciences, serving in the office of the Secretary of Finance
  • Julia Carney, a political science major who graduated in May, serving in the office of the Secretary of Natural Resources
  • Rickee Jones, a political science major who graduated in May, serving in the governor’s communications office
  • Cainan Townsend, who is entering the Masters of Public Administration program at the Wilder School this fall, serving in the office of the Secretary of Education

“For me the Governor’s Fellows Program is a chance to connect policy with on-the-ground issues,” Hatcher recently told the Wilder School. “I’m inspired to be working on crucial issues that impact real citizens. Engaging with the very individuals who are entrusted with making those critical decisions is a tremendous honor.”
