Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe will be the featured speaker at Virginia Commonwealth University’s spring commencement ceremony on May 9.

McAuliffe, the 72nd governor of Virginia, was sworn into office on Jan. 11, 2014, and has focused on growing Virginia’s economy. Trade missions, including two to China, have resulted in thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in investment in the commonwealth.

In his first executive order, McAuliffe banned discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender state employees. He has expanded the Virginia Values Veterans initiative, which encourages employers to recruit, hire, train and retrain veterans. He has also promoted “A Healthy Virginia,” a 10-step plan to improve and expand access to health care for veterans, individuals with serious mental illness, low-income pregnant women and working families.

McAuliffe attended Catholic University and Georgetown Law School. A lifelong entrepreneur, he started his first business at age 14 and eventually created more than two dozen companies. At age 30, he became the nation’s youngest bank chairman.

Commencement exercises will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, at the Richmond Coliseum. Watch the ceremony online at www.vcu.edu. For more information about the ceremony, visit www.commencement.vcu.edu.
