On Friday, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry will host Give Kids a Smile Day, a nationwide event that provides free services for children in need of dental care who do not have dental insurance.

Nearly one in four children aged 2-to-11 years old has untreated cavities in their baby teeth, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At Give Kids a Smile Day, the Department of Pediatric Dentistry will provide exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, extractions and minor restorations for children from birth to age 18.

In anticipation of the event, Elizabeth Berry, D.D.S., vice chair and assistant professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, answered questions about children’s dental health.

When should a child have their first dental appointment?

Every child should have their first dental appointment six months after their first tooth comes in or by their first birthday.

What are the main dental issues you see in children?

The main dental issue we see in children is cavities. Many children develop pain, miss school and are unable to sleep due to untreated dental decay.

What are the dangers of leaving oral problems untreated in children?

Oral health is integral to overall health. Untreated dental disease can lead to pain and affect a child’s physical, emotional and social development. Children with untreated dental decay may not be able to eat well, sleep or concentrate in school.

At what age should children begin brushing their own teeth? Flossing?

Brushing a child’s teeth should start as soon as the teeth start to come in. Flossing should be initiated as soon as two teeth touch.

What is Give Kids a Smile Day?

Give Kids a Smile Day has two purposes: helping children get the dental care they need and raising awareness of the epidemic of untreated dental disease. The program is a nationwide event that is held annually, and the VCU School of Dentistry is excited to participate again this year.

How can I determine if my child is eligible for Give Kids a Smile Day?

Any child without dental insurance is eligible.
