On Tuesday, Aug. 20, VCU will hold its annual New Student Convocation and Spirit Walk. Beginning at approximately 5 p.m., thousands of members of the VCU Class of 2017 will walk as a group from the Siegel Center to Monroe Park, creating brief delays along Broad and Laurel streets.

In order to ensure the safety of the students, faculty and staff participating in the Spirit Walk, the eastbound lanes of Broad Street will be closed between Harrison Street and Laurel Street from approximately 5 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., though the exact time is subject to change. The procession will turn right onto Laurel Street, crossing Grace Street and Franklin Street and causing temporary road closures and possible brief delays as the group passes through en route to Monroe Park.

It is recommended that drivers avoid traveling east on Broad Street between approximately 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Suggested alternatives include Leigh Street, Cary Street, Interstate 95 or the Downtown Expressway.

VCU Police is working with Richmond Police and other partners to minimize delays and ensure the safety of the students, faculty and staff participating in the event.
