VCU Police Department honors fallen military personnel

The VCU Police Department hosted a silent and reverent Memorial Day tribute to honor fallen U.S. armed service members and it plans to continue the tradition for years to come.

Ofc. Stephen Adt organized the department's second "Never Forget Memorial Run," a 1.4 mile silent run through Richmond, on May 26. This year's Memorial Day event brought out 150 runners to the Stuart C. Siegel Center. Partipants wore white T-shirts and ran silently from the Siegel Center to the Virginia War Memorial at 621 South Belvidere Street.

The run was hosted in partnership with VFW Post 6364. Charlie Hudgins, a World War II veteran, was a special guest at the run and rode in a 1942 Packard to help lead runners to the memorial.

Prior to the run, spokespersons from the VFW and the American Widow Project stressed the importance of Memorial Day as a day of remembrance, as opposed to being another day off from work and school.

Adt, who serves in the Virginia Army National Guard, said the run was “not a race, but a symbol” to honor fallen soldiers.

VCUPD Chief John Venuti called the run an opportunity to “remember those who’ve given the ultimate sacrifice.” He hopes to make the run a premiere Memorial Day tradition in Richmond.
