A bake sale, held by the Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department on Dec. 14, raised more than $1,000 for a memorial fund to support the family of fallen Virginia Tech police officer Deriek Crouse.

Police quickly put together a dessert bake off and sale. The sale attracted 18 “bakers” from the police department, other employees from VCU and students. They created more than 60 different cakes, pies, pastries, cookies, cupcakes and candies for the sale.

A line formed before the doors opened and the sale raised $755 in the first 30 minutes.

“We wanted to show support for our law enforcement family at Virginia Tech as they deal with this tragedy,” said Sgt. Patience Butters.

Crouse was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop on campus Dec. 8. Police said the gunman later shot and killed himself.

Stacie Harris and Tameeka Baugh served as judges for the competition part of the sale and awarded first place to Officer Jennifer Riemann, second place to Officer Kyle Frail, third place to Sgt. Aaron Lavigne and fourth place to student Megan Halpin.
