Virginia Commonwealth University Police will check for a variety of safety issues during an administrative checkpoint this weekend.

VCU Police will operate the checkpoint from 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, until 3 a.m. on Sunday, May 29, along the 700 block of West Main Street. Officers will check operator licenses and vehicle registrations and review seatbelt compliance and other safety issues. Any drunken or drug-impaired drivers will be arrested.

The checkpoint is being supported by a grant from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Vehicles will be screened by officers from the VCU Police Department, the City of Richmond Police Department and the Virginia State Police and agents from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

During a similar checkpoint in March, police screened 802 vehicles. Police arrested six drivers for DUI, arrested four people for marijuana possession and one for possession of Ecstasy pills. Police cited six people for driving with a suspended license, five for driving with an expired vehicle registration and three for seatbelt violations.

Editor’s Note: A staging area will be established for media and other official observers. VCU Police Capt. Grant Warren is available for interviews. Reporters interested in receiving results from the checkpoint should provide contact information to police at the scene. Results are typically compiled and released the following day.
