VCU Police, partners will hold administrative checkpoint this weekend

Virginia Commonwealth University Police will check for a variety of safety issues during an administrative checkpoint this weekend.

VCU Police will operate a checkpoint from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, along the 700 block of West Main Street. Officers will check operator licenses and vehicle registrations and review various safety issues. Any drunken or drug-impaired drivers will be arrested.

The checkpoint is supported by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Highway Safety Office and will include law enforcement personnel from the VCU Police Department, the City of Richmond Police Department and the Virginia State Police. Agents from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control also have been invited to participate.

According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, 229 people were killed and 5,861 people were injured in alcohol-related crashes in Virginia in 2012. This marks a 6.53-percent decrease in deaths and a 7.25-percent increase in injuries from 2011. Additionally, 28,719 people were convicted of DUI, a 1.98-percent increase from 2011
