VCU celebrates return of the Flamenco Festival

The Department of Music in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts will host the fourth installation of the VCU Flamenco Festival from Friday, Nov. 1, to Sunday, Nov. 3. The events will take place at the W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, 922 Park Ave., and will feature musical performances, dances and a flamenco guitar master class.

The schedule is as follows:

“Flamenco Fiesta,” Friday, Nov. 1, 7:30 p.m., General admission: $15, Students: $10
The festival’s first event will feature a performance by premier flamenco guitarist Miguelito accompanied by dancers and a singer. Miguelito is a highly renowned flamenco musician known for his swift, rhythmic playing style and melodies.

“Ricardo Marlow Flamenco Guitar Master Class,” Saturday, Nov. 2, 2 p.m., free admission
Prior to his performance later in the evening, Ricardo Marlow will conduct a class for flamenco guitarists in the James W. Black Music Center’s Recital Hall, 1015 Grove Ave.

“Flamenco Virtuoso,” Saturday, Nov. 2, 7:30 p.m., General admission: $15, Students: $10
Award-winning flamenco guitarist Marlow will perform, showcasing his brilliant percussive style of playing that is highly sought after by flamenco artists. Marlow’s performance will be accompanied by a dancer.

“Flamenco Finale,” Sunday, Nov. 3, 4 p.m., General admission: $15, Students: $10
The Flamenco Festival will close with performances by flamenco groups Sueños Gitanos and Flamenco del Sur, whose members are all graduates of the VCU Department of Music. Sueños Gitanos is known for its flowing melodies, colorful guitar harmonies and lively energy and charm. Flamenco del Sur performs original compositions, traditional forms and works by the great flamenco artists.
