James Irwin

James Irwin joined the University Public Affairs staff in 2016. He oversees coverage and content for the VCU News website and its newsletters.

Prior to joining VCU, Irwin was associate editor of GW Today at the George Washington University, where he covered politics, development, alumni affairs, sports, the university administration, board of trustees and faculty senate.

He managed alumni communications at his alma mater, James Madison University, from 2011 to 2013, and was an editor at the Washington Examiner from 2007 to 2011. Irwin’s book, “Midnight in Chattanooga,” chronicles the rise of the JMU football program, which won NCAA national championships in 2004 and 2016. His work has been recognized by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, the Virginia Press Association and the Society of Professional Journalists.
