Services
The Office of Communications and Public Relations offers video production services for both the Monroe Park and MCV Campuses. All the projects we undertake must have a public relations component and support the strategic goals of the university.
We produce student recruitment and image videos, as well as informative pieces that educate students about opportunities throughout VCU. In addition, we create educational videos for patients and families about services at the VCU Medical Center.
To discuss whether a video may help meet your communications needs, please contact Joe Kuttenkuler at (804) 828-6607 or e-mail at jpkutten@vcu.edu.
The production process
First, we meet with you to discuss the scope of your project. Some important questions we’ll discuss include who the intended audience is, what are the goals and key messages, if a script is required, what’s the budget, and where will the production take place? It’s also helpful if you can provide background material — brochures, research, statistics, etc. — to further explain the subject.
Next, we develop a creative treatment for your project based on the information we obtain from our initial meeting. This document offers a creative concept for the video and details how the production will unfold, including projected cost and the number of days it will take to shoot and edit.
During the pre-production phase we will determine all the elements we need to capture to thoroughly illustrate your story. We will work together to schedule interviews with key personnel and identify the locations and logistics where the videotaping will take place.
During field production, we record the interviews and the action. We use only professional, broadcast quality high-definition equipment. Depending on the shots needed, we may bring in additional gear to perform special camera moves.
Once the interviews and footage have been captured, the scripting and editing can begin. We transcribe the interviews, log the footage and the scriptwriter drafts the initial copy, weaving the story, interviews and images together on paper. You will review the first draft of the script and make any necessary recommendations. It’s not uncommon to go through several drafts before arriving at a final script.
Then the digital editing process begins. We will bring the script to life with the images we shot and add music and graphics where necessary to further illustrate points and create the right feel. Most projects can be edited in a week or less.
