The Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department promoted two officers to the rank of captain during a pinning ceremony on Friday, May 25, at the VCU Medical Center.

Chief John Venuti recognized newly promoted Sean Ingram and Mike O’Berry for their outstanding dedication, leadership and character.

“The leadership that is needed for this organization understands that everything we do matters, everything. The big things, the little things, the routine tasks, and the stuff that some would argue doesn’t even matter does matter,” said Venuti. “You are being promoted because you have the core characteristics to lead and influence others. I believe you can impact and influence outcomes, rather than just sit back and see what happens.”

Capt. Ingram began his service career by enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in Desert Storm and at Camp Schwab in Okinawa, Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1993 after achieving the rank of corporal.

In 1994, Ingram joined the VCU Police Department’s patrol division, serving as a field training officer and an emergency vehicle operations instructor from 1995 to 1999. He served in the newly formed Special Operations Unit from 1999 until 2002 when he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and served in the Investigative Division. In 2008, Ingram became lieutenant and commander of the support services division. Two years later, he became director of security at the VCU Health System.

Capt. Mike O’Berry has 20 years of state service under his belt, 18 of which have been with the VCU Police Department.

A Marine Corps veteran, O’Berry served in operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He also served on a West Pacific tour that included Singapore, the Philippines and Kuwait. He worked for a short time with the Virginia Department of Corrections before joining VCU as a patrol officer. He was promoted to detective sergeant in 1999, and he became a lieutenant in 2003. O’Berry served most recently as the acting captain of investigations, security services and property and evidence.

VCU began an extensive search to fill the captain positions in late 2011. According to Venuti, under the university’s strategic plan, Quest for Distinction, dramatic change is taking place within the police department, where leaders who have a thirst for excellence in everything they do are essential. Both Ingram and O’Berry exemplified that attitude.

“The future of the VCU Police Department is seated right in front of you,” said Venuti as both officers were joined and pinned by their families. “I am proud to name you captains for the Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department.”
