Representatives of the Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department joined other area police agencies on June 10 in a torch run to open the Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games.

Each summer, law enforcement officials carry a “Flame of Hope” on an eight-day, 1,900-mile trip across Virginia to raise funds and awareness for the Special Olympics.

VCU Police Security Officer Jeffrey Grant ran the entire 7.4-mile “Capitol Leg” segment of the torch run from the Virginia State Capitol to the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad on Horsepen Road.

Capt. Grant Warren, Det. Loran Carter, Officer Greg Felton, Officer Michele Cosel and Officer Jeff Hill ran in the final leg from the rescue squad to the University of Richmond, where the torch was used to light a cauldron to officially open the games. Chief John Venuti drove in the opening ceremony procession.

VCU Police and other law enforcement agencies in Central Virginia raised $94,000 for the Special Olympics.
