The Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department has received a grant from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for its efforts to increase awareness of DUI laws.

The Alcoholic Beverage Control Board approved a $6,505 grant for the department to increase awareness on the VCU campuses of the dangers of drunken driving.

The grant will be used to organize three sobriety checkpoints during the 2005-2006 academic year. The first checkpoint will be during the week of National College Alcohol Awareness Week in October. VCU Police will work with student life organizations on campus to create awareness of the problem.

During the October event, police will sponsor an informational booth for students to ask questions and learn more about alcohol and its adverse effects.

Two other checkpoints are scheduled throughout the year.
