Road closures planned for 10th Street on VCU’s MCV Campus; traffic plan and detours in place

Starting Sunday, Feb. 24, through Wednesday, Feb. 27, street closures will be in effect on Virginia Commonwealth University’s MCV Campus for portions of North 10th Street at the intersection of East Leigh Street. The closures are necessary as a contractor for VCU Facilities Management completes installation of a manhole at the intersection.

North 10th Street will be blocked at the intersection of East Leigh Street. Turpin Street, which begins near VCU’s Larrick Student Center and ends at North 10th Street, has been closed and will continue to be closed. Closures will be in place 24 hours a day. 

VCU Police officers will be working to mitigate congestion at 10th and Leigh streets with morning and evening rush-hour traffic control starting Feb. 25. 

Orange detour signs marking the temporary routes for vehicles traveling in both directions on Leigh Street will be posted. (These closures will affect traffic to VCU’s N Deck parking facility at 615 N. 10th St., and a VCU day care facility in the same building. VCU Parking staff will be posted at the deck to assist with entry and exit.

  • Westbound traffic on Leigh Street, including VCU day care and N Deck patrons, will follow a route along Leigh Street and will turn northbound on North Eighth Street. Drivers will need to follow Eighth Street to the Duval Street Connector and turn eastbound. A section of North 10th Street will be open for access to the N Deck and day care drop-off/pick-up traffic only.
  • Eastbound traffic on Leigh Street will have to turn northbound on North Fourth Street, eastbound on Jackson Street and northbound onto North Eighth Street to access the Duval Street Connector for N Deck and day care access.

The university is communicating with N Deck subscribers, day care center families and other VCU and VCU Health community members affected by this closure. All drivers in the area are encouraged to allow extra time as heavy traffic is expected. 

This project is expected to end Feb. 27. However, schedules are subject to change.
