The Central Virginia Coalition to “Stop The Bleed” (a collaboration of regional health care providers including VCU Health System and HCA’s Chippenham, Johnston-Willis and Henrico Doctors hospitals) is hosting a hands-on bleeding control training for Richmond International Airport personnel on how to stop severe bleeding in emergencies before professional help arrives.

The training will take place Feb. 23 at 8:15 a.m. at the Richmond International Airport (Commission Lower Level Training Room).

At the event, staff will learn how to take action and stop a victim’s bleeding by listening during a short class and then practicing how to apply tourniquets and gauze to dummies and mock wounds. Trauma care experts from all participating health systems will be on-site to demonstrate the life-saving techniques. The chief of the Richmond Airport police department will be available to speak about the importance of the training.

The Stop The Bleed campaign launched in 2015 as a way to educate the public on life-saving techniques that could be used during an emergency, such as a mass shooting. Since the 1999 mass casualty incident at Columbine High School in Colorado, more than 300 people have been killed during active shooter situations. The belief is that those already on the scene can best help and save victims if they know what to do, rather than waiting for trained first responders to arrive once the danger has passed.

Please contact Joe Stevens (804-226-3024) or Troy Bell (804-226-3022) from the Richmond International Airport public information office for day-of support. The Commission Lower Level Training Room is located under the escalator by United Service Organizations (USO) Center.
