Located on two downtown campuses in Richmond, Virginia, VCU enrolls more than 30,000 students in 233 certificate and degree programs in the arts, sciences and humanities. Twenty-two of the programs are unique in Virginia, many of them crossing the disciplines of VCU’s 11 schools and three colleges.
As one of the nation’s top research universities, VCU attracted a record $310 million in sponsored research funding in fiscal year 2019.
Several VCU graduate and first-professional programs are
ranked among the top 50 in the nation
in U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” including the No. 1 ranked sculpture and nurse anesthesia programs.
VCU Life Sciences
builds upon the university’s traditional scientific strengths in the biological sciences, basic biomedical sciences, patient care, biomedical engineering and biotechnology. VCU Life Sciences is comprehensive in its involvement of all levels of students in the study of life sciences, from freshmen to students in the professional programs to Ph.D. candidates, and integrates diverse disciplines from all over the university, including the academic medical center as well as arts and humanities.
VCU Health
is home to one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers — VCU Medical Center — and also comprises four health sciences schools ( Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy) and one college (Health Professions), Community Memorial Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, VCU Massey Cancer Center, MCV Physicians (an 830-plus-physician-faculty group practice) and Virginia Premier. The 1,125-bed health system offers state-of-the-art care in more than 200 specialty areas, many of national and international note, including organ transplantation, head and spinal cord trauma, burn healing and cancer treatment. VCU Medical Center is the only comprehensive Level I adult, pediatric and burn trauma center in the region. As a leader in health care research, VCU Health offers patients the opportunity to participate in programs that advance evolving treatment, such as those sponsored by the National Cancer Institute through VCU’s Massey Cancer Center, Virginia’s first NCI-designated cancer center.
VCU’s nationally recognized theater, music and dance programs offer more than 365 concerts, performances and recitals a year.
VCU is an urban leader, forging ties with business, industry and government in such innovative projects as the collocation of the

College of Engineering

Virginia BioTechnology Research Park
.
The university and health system are the largest-single employer in the Richmond area, with more than 17,744 full-time and 6,490 part-time employees, including 2,551 full-time instructional faculty members — many of them nationally and internationally recognized in their fields.
VCU’s 17 varsity sports compete at the NCAA Division I level as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. In recent years, VCU has participated in NCAA tournaments in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, golf, men’s soccer and men’s and women’s tennis.
