Nearly 5,800 new and returning students are moving into residence halls at Virginia Commonwealth University this month, and they are arriving in increased numbers as the second half of August begins. The familiar rite of passage along the streets facing campus has parents and students lugging in containers of all sizes and varieties filled with their creature comforts from home.
Students are bringing with them everything from clothing and laptops to pop-up desks and TVs. A new time-slot scheduling process is helping to keep things organized. Safety and well-being are always top of mind and this year that includes water stations to offset the August humidity and a bevy of welcoming hall directors and resident assistants.
While traditional might not be an accurate adjective to use for this year’s transition to living on campus, it’s one major step closer to routines of the past.
