A powered wheelchair for pediatric patients, an anti-vibration cart to help transport works of art, and a virtual reality system to train surgeons are some of the innovative research and design prototypes that will be on display at the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering Capstone Design Expo.

The annual event will be held Friday, April 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Stuart C. Siegel Center, 1200 W. Broad St. Awards will be presented at 2:30 p.m. The expo is free and open to the public.

The VCU College of Engineering’s Capstone Design Expo is the college’s largest student event of the year, showcasing more than 90 projects and presentations, the result of more than eight months of work among students, sponsors and faculty advisers. The prototypes and inventions on display offer solutions that can have a lasting impact on society. Awards will be presented for best project per department, the best industrial project and the Dean's Choice Award. Attendees will get to vote on the People’s Choice Award.

The program also features projects from VCU Engineering’s Vertically Integrated Projects teams. The VIP program provides undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in multiyear, multidisciplinary, team-based projects under the guidance of faculty and graduate students in their areas of expertise. In addition to the opportunity to develop mentoring skills, these projects foster new innovations. The multiyear time frame gives the innovations room to develop and become viable technologies ripe for commercialization.
