VCU will host State Department officials for panel on global conflict

On Friday, the Department of Political Science in the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University will host members of the U.S. Department of State and the nongovernmental organization Alliance for Peacebuilding for a panel discussion on “Data Driven Approaches to Global Conflict.”
The panelists will explore how data can be used to understand, predict, address and prevent global conflict. They will discuss how governments, NGOs and academics conduct data-driven research on conflict and the challenges they face in doing so. The discussion will touch on recent and ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Colombia and other countries around the world.
A panel discussion with officials from the U.S. Department of State, the Department of Political Science at VCU and the Alliance for Peacebuilding, a nongovernmental organization focused on ending violent conflict. Panelists will explore how data can be used to understand, predict, address and prevent global conflict.
When: 10 a.m. to noon, Friday, April 22

Panelists will include:
- Matthew Steinhelfer, deputy assistant secretary of state in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations
- Elizabeth Hume, executive director of the Alliance for Peacebuilding
- Michael Paarlberg, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at VCU and an associate fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies
- Jessica Trisko Darden, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at VCU and a nonresident fellow at George Washington University’s Program on Extremism
A meet-and-greet will be held from 2-3 p.m. at the Rams Lounge in The Commons, where students can ask questions and connect with the panelists, including U.S. Department of State professionals.
The panel discussion is free and open to the public. Seating is limited so those interested must register in advance.
