Alison Miller was surprised when called to the stage. Often content in the background, she now found herself in the spotlight.
Miller, interim assistant vice president of human resources at Virginia Commonwealth University, was named the winner of the 2023 Alcott HR Stewardship Award from Richmond SHRM at its strategic leadership conference on Oct. 19.
“I was humbled and amazed to receive this award,” Miller said, reflecting on the moment. “There were so many skilled and dedicated HR leaders nominated, just to be listed among them was an honor.”
The Alcott HR Stewardship Award is named for Jeannie Alcott, who retired as executive director of Richmond SHRM in 2020 and was known for her stewardship within the HR leadership community. The award is given to someone with at least 10 years of leadership experience in HR or a similar/related area.
“I couldn't think of a better leader to carry on the legacy of this award,” said Carol Ann Lawson, senior HR strategist and consultant at VCU and Miller’s nominator. “It is rare to find an HR leader who is as knowledgeable, passionate, strategic and humble as Alison. I am so excited she can be formally recognized for her stewardship and many contributions to the HR profession.”
Miller became interim AVP in July after the retirement of Cathleen Burke. For the preceding six years, Miller was executive director of HR service delivery.
“This is a well-deserved recognition of Alison’s significant contributions to the HR profession and to VCU,” said Meredith Weiss, Ph.D., vice president for administration. “Alison reflects the very best in HR leadership, and VCU is fortunate to have her professionalism, creativity, empathy and sound judgment.”
There were five other award nominees, all HR leaders at companies and organizations in the Richmond area. Miller was accompanied at the conference by members of VCU Human Resources, VCU Administration and leadership colleagues.
“Throughout my career I have been privileged to learn and grow with the support of amazing colleagues and mentors.” Miller said. “I look forward to continuing to help create an amazing workplace experience at VCU through creativity and collaboration.”
