About Gov. L. Douglas Wilder:

Gov. L. Douglas Wilder’s story is one of unprecedented achievement and inspiring leadership. As the first elected African American governor in the United States, his tenure as Virginia’s 66th governor was marked by leadership that transcended boundaries and was synonymous with fiscal prudence, twice earning Virginia accolades as the best-managed state during his term.

Wilder’s rich journey began with his display of valor in the Korean War where he earned a Bronze Star for heroic service in ground combat, leading to a trailblazing career in Virginia’s political landscape. His term culminated in impactful legislative reforms spanning health care, housing and substantial investments in education, significantly shaping Virginia’s present and future.

A staunch champion of civil rights and advocate of people-centric governance, Wilder’s philosophy has always been clear: Governance should prioritize its people above all. His unwavering commitment to civil rights is evident in his enduring legacies, such as establishing a state holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and diversifying Virginia’s judiciary, pushing relentlessly towards a more inclusive future.

Wilder’s fervent belief in the transformative power of education, particularly his advocacy for quality and accessibility in education with a focus on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), has been a cornerstone of his legacy. His academic journey, significantly shaped by Virginia Union University and Howard University, underscores the critical role of providing transformative educational opportunities. This commitment is evident in his illustrious legal career and ongoing efforts to empower the next generation.
