This January, the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University, in partnership with Virginia Union University and Howard University, invites the public to celebrate the exceptional journey and extraordinary legacy of Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation’s first elected African American governor. Two significant events will honor his enduring influence in American politics and his unwavering commitment to education and leadership.

Celebrating Gov. Wilder’s Life and Legacy: Documentary Premiere and Reception on His 93rd Birthday

Date: Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024

Kicking off the celebrations at Virginia Union University, this special evening will feature a reception and the premiere of a documentary film. This event, free and open to the public, provides an extraordinary glimpse into Wilder’s life, offering intimate insight into his personal and political journey. The documentary, revealing the moments and experiences that forged the man behind the legend, allows attendees to connect with the human story behind his historic public service. This unique screening is a tribute to a leader whose life’s work has been instrumental in shaping our society.

National Ovation Gala: “A National Ovation to L. Douglas Wilder: Honoring 70 Years of Leadership & Service”

This gala, a unique collaboration between VCU, VUU and Howard University, will not only commemorate Wilder’s legacy but also herald the inauguration of a scholarship fund. This fund will benefit students of the Wilder School who aspire to make a significant impact in public service.
