Expectations about class schedules

Key elements of VCU’s bold and vibrant learning environment are the respect of free speech and the adherence to guidelines about class schedules.

Students deserve to know when their classes will take place. If a class is canceled, it must be done in accordance with Chapter 2 of VCU’s Academic Affairs Handbook

All faculty and staff are expected to know and follow the procedures for course cancellations of any kind. If a class is canceled for reasons not covered by the policy, that cancellation decision may be subject to administrative review and appropriate follow-up action.

VCU has sent the entire Academic Affairs Handbook – including class cancellation policies – to all deans with direction to share it in their schools and colleges.

Faculty and staff should not use the classroom to impose personal beliefs on students. If students feel uncomfortable in the classroom for any reason, VCU’s Office of Student Advocacy is a comprehensive resource center for all students, offering guidance and access to all university services.

The entire VCU community is committed to the academic success of our students. VCU has an obligation to create learning environments with no barriers to our students’ academic activities.
