Formerly Conjoined Twins Return to Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU

Formerly conjoined twins Maria and Teresa Tapia of the Dominican Republic are returning to the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, where a reception will be held to mark the one year since a complex 20-hour procedure separated them.

Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, the Hospitality House and the World Pediatric Project will welcome the girls and their mother and celebrate the children’s care team on Thursday, Nov. 8, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Hermes A. Kontos Medical Sciences Building courtyard, 1217 E. Marshall St.  Parking will be available for media in the North Hospital loading zone.

David Lanning, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor in the VCU Department of Surgery and surgeon-in-chief, Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, collaborated with a team made up of about 45 physicians and pediatric subspecialists to separate the twins last November. 

Lanning, the children’s mother, Lisandra Sanatis, representatives from the World Pediatric Project and the Hospitality House will provide comments during the celebration.
