The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine is hosting a symposium that will include experts from across the country in pain management.

The VCU Pain Management Symposium 2010 will be held Oct. 9 and Oct. 10 at the Richmond Marriott. While not open to the public, it presents media with an opportunity to speak with experts and learn about chronic pain management.

Chronic pain affects nearly 80 percent of all American adults at some point in their lifetime. The symposium is designed for physicians and other health care professionals who encounter patients suffering from painful disorders.

Faculty experts from VCU will include Maged Hamza, M.D., associate professor, departments of Anesthesiology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, who is also director of the Pain Fellowship Program and the Interventional Pain Program; and Bruce Mathern, M.D., associate professor of Neurosurgery.
