Hugh Benton Douglas Jr., D.D.S., M.S., a longtime faculty member of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, died Jan. 29 from pancreatic cancer at the age of 63.
Dr. Douglas began his tenure at VCU's School of Dentistry in 1970, where he served as a faculty member in the Department of Prosthodontics until his retirement in 2006. As a prosthodontist, he specialized in implant, esthetic and reconstructive dentistry. His research interests included restoration of implants and restoration of endodontically treated teeth. An active member of the School of Dentistry faculty, it would be impossible to quantify the impact of Dr. Douglas's contributions to the education of decades of graduates.
Colleagues, friends and patients have raised more than $300,000 for the Hugh Douglas Clinic — the new main clinic in the W. Baxter Perkinson Jr. Building now under construction. It will be dedicated to excellence, which is the hallmark of his career.
"The generous gifts from many individuals demonstrates to all the phenomenal respect people have for Dr. Hugh Douglas and their desire to honor him and to help make a difference in the lives of our future students and patients," said School of Dentistry Dean Ron Hunt. The response for contributions in his name was overwhelming, a true testimony to his decades of teaching and service.
Dr. Ellen Byrne, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, a long time friend said: "His patients cherish the care he provided for them and his former students are grateful for his guidance. Hugh was an outstanding clinician who was loved by many in the Richmond community and beyond. He touched countless lives through his engaging interaction."
"Over the years I always heard how 'gifted' Hugh's hands were. I was told multiple times and by numerous patients and other practitioners that his work was absolutely perfect. I also know he had the ability to see each person as a whole, not just as a dental patient." says his wife, Pam.
Dr. Douglas received his B.S. in chemistry from the College of William and Mary in 1966, and his D.D.S. from the VCU School of Dentistry in 1970. In 1974, he received a M.S. in prosthodontics from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela, two sons, Paul and Stephen and his sister Connie.
