Statement on the Death of VCU Student Caitlin Kremp

The Virginia Commonwealth University community mourns the loss of 18-year-old Caitlin Kremp, a Dean’s list business major from Hampton, Va., who died in a hiking accident in Colorado on Tuesday.

Caitlin was among a group of nine students, mostly from VCU, along with a leader, who were part of a trip sponsored by the Outdoor Adventure Program in VCU’s Recreational Sports Department. She was a student worker in the program. Authorities say Caitlin apparently fell from a ledge in the Weminuche Wilderness area in the southwestern part of the state.

Grief counseling is being provided to the students who also were on the trip and will be available on campus for Caitlin’s friends and colleagues. Counseling arrangements may be made by calling 828-6200.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Beverly J. Warren, Ph.D., Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

A memorial service will be held for Caitlin on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 250 Fox Hill Road, Hampton.

Memorial donations may be made to a VCU scholarship fund in memory of Caitlin Kremp, Old Point National Bank, Professional Park, 11751 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, VA 23606.
