In order to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Stop the Violence Movement founded by hip-hop artist and activist KRS-One, a Stop the Violence Forum and Concert will be held in Richmond this week.
The Stop the Violence Forum will occur on Jan. 27 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Commons Theater on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. The forum will feature notable panelists KRS-One, Chioke I'Anson (VCU), and Zoe Spencer, Ph.D. (Virginia State University). The moderator will be Kimberly Brown, Ph.D., interim chair of VCU’s Department of African American Studies in the College of Humanities and Sciences. The forum is being hosted by the Department of African American Studies at VCU, the African & African American Student Empowerment Project, and Black Art Student Empowerment. The forum is free and open to the public.
The Stop the Violence Concert will be held at The National on Jan. 28, featuring KRS-One. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $27 in advance and $37 on the day of the show. Tickets can be purchased online at www.axs.com. The concert is being hosted by Team Coolin, G-Man Entertainment, and Griot Unlimited.
The Stop the Violence Movement is to promote unity in the community and to encourage youth to use their minds instead of violence to resolve conflict. It is to encourage citizens to come together in order to effectively discuss issues and concerns, but more importantly to offer positive solutions. City officials, law enforcement, local dignitaries and all citizens are encouraged to participate and support stopping the violence in our communities.
