Once again, Virginia Commonwealth University is showing it walks the green walk when it comes to sustainability. Last week, the university unveiled Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations at the West Broad Street Parking Deck on the Monroe Park Campus and the N Deck on the MCV Campus.

At 240 volts, L2 EV charging stations can charge a vehicle in one to four hours — up to three times faster than an L1 charging station. VCU is the first university campus in the state to acquire the L2 charging stations.

Installing the L2 EV charging stations helps the university fulfill a number of objectives, said Ed Bennett, executive director of Physical Plant and deputy for Facilities Management at VCU.

“We really want to encourage our faculty, staff and students to drive an electric vehicle,” Bennett said. “We want to encourage the technology. And, from VCU’s perspective, we want to have a noteworthy sustainability program.

Each deck has two charging stations. Parking lot subscribers, or those who pay the daily rate to park in the West Broad deck, can use a charging station at no additional cost.
