Virginia Commonwealth University marked the beginning of a new tradition on Dec. 8 with its first-ever full cap and gown Fall Commencement exercises, held in the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

President Eugene P. Trani, Ph.D., spoke of inspiration and pride during his commencement address. "How fortunate we are to acknowledge the accomplishments of these graduates during this time of appreciation for our blessings," Trani said in his opening remarks.

More than 1,800 students received their degrees. Minority groups represented 30 percent of the graduating class, and 66 percent were women. Forty-six different countries were represented, as well as 33 states.

Before commencement exercises began, VCU’s Alumni Association held a luncheon for graduates and their families in the Student Commons.
