Virginia Commonwealth University will host its second annual Global Summer Institute of Music, an intensive summer program that brings talented young musicians from different cultures to Richmond, from Aug. 2 to Aug. 9.
In its continued pursuit of diversity and innovation, the Department of Music in the VCU School of the Arts created the institute to foster a unique environment for global cultural learning through artistic exchange. The program provides young musicians with valuable feedback from faculty while allowing for immersive instrumental experiences in a supportive environment. Participants enroll in activities such as daily music lessons, master classes, workshops, concerts, English language groups, cultural discovery sessions and an excursion to Washington, D.C.
Yin Zheng, D.M.A., assistant professor of piano and keyboard area coordinator in the music department, is director of this year’s institute. Approximately 40 talented young musicians from China and the United States will participate, along with music faculty from around the world. Free concerts will take place at the Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, the James W. Black Music Center Recital Hall, the Gottwald Playhouse, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Grace & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
