Dr. Daniel M. Laskin, professor in Virginia Commonwealth University's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, recently received the 2003 Distinguished Dental Alumnus Award at the annual University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Dentistry Reunion.
The Distinguished Dental Alumnus Award is the highest honor that the UIC College of Dentistry can award to an alumnus.
Laskin was chosen for the honor by the UIC College of Dentistry Alumni Board of Directors for his leadership, contributions and accomplishments in organized dentistry. He was nominated by Dr. Irwin Robinson, a board member and one of Laskin's former colleagues at UIC.
William S. Bike, associate director of advancement and alumni affairs at UIC said the board of directors selected Laskin because he, along with Dr. Bernard G. Sarnat, helped to create the UIC College of Dentistry's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and made it one of the world's most renowned.
Beginning at UIC and continuing at VCU, Laskin has performed groundbreaking research on connective tissue physiology, craniofacial growth and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pathology. Laskin was editor of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery making more than 800 contributions to oral and maxillofacial surgery literature.
Laskin received his Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University, his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry, and his Master of Science degree from UIC College of Dentistry.
A Richmond resident, Laskin has been with VCU's School of Dentistry since 1983, and is former chairman of the Department of Surgery's Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
