The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists has named a Virginia Commonwealth University faculty member as its researcher of the year.
Chuck Biddle, Ph.D., a certified registered nurse anesthetist, has been a professor and the director of research at VCU since August 1999. He also has served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists for more than 18 years.
He also serves on several national committees and is a reviewer for other journals.
“My goal is to bridge the research-to-practice gap,” Biddle said. “There have been some incredible technological and pharmacological advances in anesthesia care recently, but these can be a two-edged sword, and my goal is to promote patient safety in the face of these advances.”
The AANA Foundation Researcher of the Year Award will be presented at the association’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C., in August.
Biddle received his nursing education at the University of Southern Colorado, and went on to get bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Old Dominion University. He obtained his doctoral degree in epidemiology from the University of Missouri.
The AANA represents 30,000 certified nurse anesthetists nationally and promotes education, practice standards and guidelines for administering anesthesia, as well as providing consultation for private and governmental organizations. The AANA also supports the profession by awarding research grants to individuals and organizations.
