Award-winning Poet C.K. Williams visits VCU

C.K. Williams, the winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award in poetry, will read from his work at Virginia Commonwealth University on Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. in the VCU School of Business Auditorium, Room 101, 1015 Floyd Ave. (The venue for this event has changed from the original announcement.) The event is free and open to the public.

Williams has published 10 books of poetry. His most recent, “Collected Poems,” appeared in 2006. Williams’ collection, “The Singing,” won the National Book Award in 2003 and his previous book, “Repair,” won the Pulitzer Prize in 2000. His book, “Flesh and Blood,” won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1987.

In addition to poetry, Williams has published translations of Sophocles’ “Women of Trachis,” Euripides’ “Bacchae” and the poems of Francis Ponge, among others. His book of essays, “Poetry and Consciousness,” appeared in 1998, and a memoir, “Misgivings,” in 2000. Williams is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and teaches in the writing program at Princeton University.

Williams’ appearance is one of several events for the fall sponsored by the VCU Department of English and the Graduate Writers Association. Williams will also participate in a question-and-answer session Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. in the conference room at Hibbs Hall, 900 Park Ave.
