VCU Health experts to focus on healthy living topics in free monthlong seminar series

VCU Health presents its free educational seminar series throughout the month of April featuring experts who will provide important healthy living information and answer questions on a variety of common health challenges.
The following seminars will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s Kelly Education Center, 1800 Lakeside Ave. All seminars are free and open to the public, but registration is recommended. “Using Your Body Movement as Medicine”
Avid runner or walker? But your knees, legs, joints are starting to bother you? In order stay healthy and strong, it is suggested to keep your body moving at all ages of life. Join Katherine L. Dec, M.D., from the VCU Health Department of Orthopaedic Surgery as she discusses ways to keep the body in motion.

“Weight Loss Surgery Gaining Popularity and Acceptance”
Almost one of every five teens is obese as defined by the National Institutes of Health. Being overweight or obese can cause an increase in many health-related illnesses and contribute to a decrease in quality of life well into adulthood. Join David Lanning, M.D., Ph.D., surgeon-in-chief of Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University, as he shares the multidisciplinary treatment programs, including adolescent bariatric surgery, available at CHoR’s Healthy Lifestyles Center.

“Is This The End Of Chronic Tendon Disease?”
Chronic tendon disease is painful because of a buildup of scar tissue rather than active inflammation. Plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow and jumper's knee are some examples of this process of scar tissue buildup in a tendon. There is a new minimally invasive outpatient procedure to treat the scar tissue: no stitches, no overnight stay and no lengthy recovery. Join Jeff Elbich, M.D., from the VCU Health Department of Radiology as he discusses this exciting treatment.
