Members of the Virginia Commonwealth University community participated in VA Pridefest 2012 on Saturday, Sept. 29. Held at Kanawha Plaza in Richmond, Pridefest is an annual event hosted by VA Pride, a representative body for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community working to instill pride, celebrate unity and embrace diversity in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Several organizations from VCU were involved in this year’s festivities, including the LGBT Subcommittee of the University Equity and Diversity Committee, the VCU Community Advisory Board, Queer Action student organization and VCU Athletics, which had tables at the event. Rodney the Ram took part, as well.
The event included live performances, children’s entertainment, shopping from local vendors, food and drinks.
The University Equity and Diversity Committee, which is advisory in nature, is charged with monitoring, reviewing and recommending to the provost changes to policies and practices that affect the university’s ability to provide equal opportunity and treatment, and to provide a supportive, non-hostile environment for its diverse populations of students, staff and faculty. The LGBT Subcommittee addresses issues related to the needs of the LGBT population at VCU.
