Katherine Hayles, author of "My Mother was a Computer," will lecture on gender issues in cyberspace on Feb. 26 at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Hayles, whose work concerns the relationship of literature and science, will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the VCU Student Commons Theater, 907 Floyd Ave. The event is free and open to the public.
In "My Mother was a Computer," Hayles examines the ways intelligent machines have penetrated nearly every aspect of contemporary life and thought. Her other books include "How We Became Posthuman: Virtual Bodies in Cybernetics" and "Literature and Informatics." She is the Hillis Professor of Literature and Media Arts at UCLA and writes frequently on gender in electronic space.
Hayles' presentation is part of the year-long series, "Creating and Consuming Culture in the Digital Age," which is sponsored by the Department of English in collaboration with the School of the Mass Communications and the School of the Arts. It is funded by the VCU Honors Program through its National Endowment for the Humanities Year program.
