RICHMOND, Va. —"Betrayal," a semi-autobiographical reflection on the solidity of marriage, will be produced by Theatre VCU in March at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Shafer Street Playhouse, Shafer Court. Written by Howard Pinter, the play will be staged on March 16-18 and March 23-25 at 7:30 p.m. and March 19 at 2:30 p.m.

Set in London, "Betrayal" explores love’s often-fickle nature and its impact on two close friends, according to Robin Armstrong, a third-year graduate student who is directing the production as part of her master’s thesis.

Played by Jerrold Soloman, Jerry is the best friend and business partner of Robert, played by Stephen S. Atherholt. Both men are married and guilty of extramarital affairs. The play opens with Robert’s wife, Emma, portrayed by Jana Thompson, talking with Jerry, with whom she ended a seven-year affair two years ago. As they talk, they realize Robert knew of their affair. The VCU production uses photographs to trace the characters and story over time.

"As the play unfolds over nine scenes, we watch snapshots of the central characters’ lives, which give voice to each person’s betrayals of friendship and love," Armstrong said. "At the same time, we go back in time to see how these characters became friends and how those relationships fell apart."
