U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott to Speak at VCU’s Fall Commencement

U.S. Rep. Robert C. “Bobby” Scott will be the featured speaker at Virginia Commonwealth University’s fall commencement exercises.

Scott, D-Va., is serving his eighth term in the U.S. Congress after 15 years as a member of the Virginia General Assembly. Scott made history when he was elected to his congressional seat in 1992 by becoming the first African-American elected to Congress from Virginia since reconstruction and only the second African-American elected to Congress in the state’s history.

Scott serves on the Committee on the Judiciary, acting as chairman of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. Scott also serves on the Committee on Education and Labor, the Committee on the Budget and the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct.

Scott was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Newport News. He is a graduate of Harvard University and Boston College Law School. He practiced law in Newport News from 1973 to 1991. He received an honorable discharge for his service in the Massachusetts National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve.

VCU commencement exercises take place on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 10 a.m. at the Stuart C. Siegel Center, 1200 W. Broad St.
