VCU global learning fair scheduled for Sept. 15

Virginia Commonwealth University students who want to explore the world can propel their journey this month. Cultures in Common(s): A Global Learning Fair will showcase multiple ways that students can engage globally, whether through study abroad, intercultural programs on campus or connections in the local‑global community. This event will also welcome VCU's new international students to campus and celebrate students' common cultures as VCU Rams.

Sponsored by VCU’s Global Education Office, the fair is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 15, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Commons Plaza.

“We want all students to see that global experiences are accessible, impactful for their future career development, and truly open to everyone,” said Stephanie Tignor, executive director of global learning.

At the Cultures in Common fair, students can meet with representatives from the GEO as well as study abroad providers and international universities. Among visiting institutions are the Sant’Anna Institute, the Institute for American Universities, the American Councils for International Education and the University of Liverpool.

“One of the best aspects of our university community is how welcoming and curious our students are,” said Kelly Richard, assistant director of global learning. “Whether they are interested in exploring the world, or have come to VCU from far away, all Rams are welcome."

There will also be a stamp rally, with students collecting stamps in a passport at activities throughout the fair. Students who complete their passport booklet will get a free meal ticket for their choice of the participating food trucks, which will showcase intercultural cuisines until 2 p.m.

GEO also plans to draw the names of three registrants by random to receive a $500 study abroad voucher.

Attendees can meet students participating in VCU's English Language Program during the ELP Tea Time  from 2 to 3 p.m. Cultures in Common will close with the GEO’s Global Buddies matching event, where students who have signed up the program will meet their buddies from 4 to 5 p.m.
