Marilyn Tavenner, a two-time VCU alumna, won confirmation last week from the United States Senate to serve as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Tavenner owns a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the VCU School of Nursing and a master’s degree in health administration from the School of Allied Health Professions. She had served as the acting administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services since December 2011.
Tavenner was the first administrator for the centers confirmed in more than nine years.
“Marilyn brings with her a breadth of experience and expertise from virtually all angles of health care policy and delivery, having served as a hospital CEO, a state health official and a registered nurse,” said Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “Marilyn will serve in a critical role at CMS as we work to improve the health care for hundreds of millions of Americans.”
Tavenner has visited campus twice in recent years to discuss health care policy, including most recently during a visit in October 2012. She also visited in December 2011, just two weeks after President Barack Obama announced his intention to nominate her to the administrator post.
