Members of Virginia Commonwealth University’s AmeriCorps program will join other VCU students, faculty, staff and Richmond area residents in a three-day community service effort.

“MLK: A ‘Day On’ Greater Richmond” runs Jan. 17 through Jan. 19. It’s part of a national effort to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by promoting thousands of community service projects across the country.

“We’re not just remembering Dr. King by reflection but by taking action,” said Erin-Marie Brown, VCU AmeriCorps field coordinator.

Hundreds of volunteers will participate in the local effort by working with nonprofit groups on one of a dozen projects taking place across the Richmond area.

Some will organize the library of “Chattering Children,” a program that helps children with hearing loss learn to listen and talk. Others will help ElderHomes to repair an elderly resident’s porch or work with BARK, which finds homes for unwanted, abandoned and mistreated animals.

“We’re hoping this will lead to a greater commitment to volunteering and community service," said Elizabeth Dodson, administrative coordinator, AmeriCorps/America Reads. “This effort lets people know just how easy it is to volunteer, and we’re hoping this will encourage people to volunteer for something that interests them on a long-term basis.”

VCU AmeriCorps also is working with 30 VCU daycare students to put together stuffed bears for local children in need.

A celebration for volunteers is open to members of the community and takes place on Jan. 19 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the VCU Student Commons Commonwealth Ballroom.

“MLK: A ‘Day On’ Greater Richmond” is supported by "Hands on Greater Richmond," The City of Richmond Volunteer Solutions, Hanover County Department of Community Resources, the Junior League of Richmond and the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg.

VCU’s AmeriCorp program is supported by the Division of Community Engagement.

There are still plenty of opportunities to volunteer, but those interested must register to participate. For a list of projects or to register online, visit Hands On Greater Richmond.
