VCU Among Top Producers of Fulbright Scholars

Virginia Commonwealth University ranked in a tie for third among United States research institutions for most Fulbright Scholars produced during the 2010-11 academic year, according to a list compiled by the Institute of International Education.

VCU, which has six Fulbright Scholars this academic year, was tied with five other schools in the third position. Fulbright scholars included in the tally were faculty members and other professionals at a school.

VCU faculty members receiving Fulbright Scholarships for 2010-11 represent a range of fields.

  • Maria E. Anzalone, ScD., assistant professor, Department of Occupational Therapy, will serve as a visiting lecturer and researcher at University College Cork in Ireland.
  • Kevin Beanland, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, will continue his research on infinite dimensional Banach space theory at the National Technical University of Athens.
  • Paul Bukaveckas, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Biology and VCU Life Sciences Center for Environmental Studies, will be in residence at the Coastal Research and Planning Institute of Klaipeda University in Lithuania.
  • Michael Steve Czekajlo, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of Anesthesiology, will be lecturing medical simulation in education at Poznan University of Medical Sciences in Poland.
  • Janet Gilmore-Bryan, M.F.A., M.A., an adjunct faculty member who teaches mural painting in VCU’s Master of Inderdisciplinary Studies program, will teach mural painting in Bulgaria’s National Academy of Art.
  • Wendy Kliewer, Ph.D., professor, Department of Psychology, will work with faculty and students at the University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa.

In addition to VCU’s faculty scholars, the university featured a school-record eight Fulbright Student Scholars this year.
