David Burton, Ph.D., associate professor of art education in Virginia Commonwealth University's School of the Arts, has been selected to receive the 2003 Manuel Barkan Memorial Award by the National Art Education Association (NAEA).

This annual award recognizes NAEA members who, through their published work, contribute a product of scholarly merit in the field. Burton's collaborative article "NAEP Cohort, Studies in Art Education, Vol. 43(1)" merits this recognition.

Mac Arthur Goodwin, president of the NAEA, will present Burton with the Manuel Barkan Memorial Award at the NAEA Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in April.

The NAEA is a non-profit, educational organization focused on promoting art education through professional development, service, advancement of knowledge and leadership. The NAEA is made up of over 22,000 art educators from every level of instruction.

Burton, who has taught at VCU for 25 years, received the VCU School of the Arts Distinguished Achievement in Teaching Award in 2002 and the VCU School of the Arts Distinguished Achievement in Service Award in 1997. He was honored as NAEA Higher Education Art Educator of the Year and Virginia Art Educator of the Year in 2001 and NAEA Southeastern Art Educator of the Year in 1999.
