VCU Celebrates Constitution Day

Virginia Commonwealth University has joined colleges and universities, high schools and federal agencies across the nation in commemorating the Sept. 17, 1787, signing of the U.S. Constitution.

Now in its 10th year, Constitution Day was established to continue the legacy of the founding fathers, promote greater awareness of this extraordinary document, and foster reflection upon the principles that continue to influence our daily lives more than 200 years after its ratification.

For this year’s celebration, VCU has coordinated a weeklong series of events and programming

Now through Sept. 19, events include a presentation and video montage displayed at Cabell and Tompkins-McCaw Libraries and a screening of "Our Constitution: A Conversation with Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Stephen Breyer." Free, pocket-sized copies of the U.S. Constitution also are available.

VCU Libraries, the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Services and the VCU Student Government Association, worked together to coordinate the activities.

Similar events will be held at campuses across the country. National annual traditions include a recitation of the preamble to the U.S. Constitution. This year, Gen. Colin Powell will lead the recitation through a webcast on Monday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.
