VCU celebrates Founders Day

Alumni Stars Awards Ceremony and Nursing Conference, Among the Highlights

A ceremony honoring 12 outstanding alumni and a nursing conference will be among the highlights of Virginia Commonwealth University’s annual Founders Day celebration, which runs Nov. 3-10.

This year’s events will feature:

  • VCU’s alumni associations will host the 1999 Founders Day Alumni Stars award ceremony and dinner for 12 graduates. Alumni stars are chosen for their professional, humanitarian and community achievements, as well as university service. The Nov. 5 event will include a semi-formal reception at 6 p.m., followed by a seated dinner and awards program at 7:30 p.m. at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. Tickets are $25.   • Former Nursing Management editor, Leah Curtin will speak about "Creating a Hope-Filled, Sustainable Future" for nursing professionals as part of the 32nd annual Nursing Lectureship and the seventh annual Nursing Alumni Conference. Hosted by VCU’s School of Nursing, the Medical College of Virginia Alumni Association of VCU and the Sigma Theta Tau honorary nursing society, the conference will be held Nov. 4-5 at the Hyatt Richmond.   • A Nov.6 benefit art auction at the Siegel Center will feature more than 50 water color paintings by VCU alumnus W. Baxter Perkinson Jr., D.D.S., a Richmond dentist and member of VCU’s board of visitors and Medical College of Virginia Hospitals Authority board. A preview of Perkinson’s works will be offered at 6 p.m. A buffet will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the live auction. Tickets are $50. Auction proceeds will support the VCU Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund. For details, call 828-1200.

  • On Nov. 3, the university community will welcome Roderick J. McDavis, Ph.D., the new provost and vice president for academic affairs. Sponsored by the African American Alumni Association, the reception will be held at the University Meeting Center at 6 p.m.

  • A Nov. 10 reception will open the "New Artists, New Works" exhibition by students in VCU’s Sculpture Department, rated among the nation’s top five graduate programs by U.S. News & World Report. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the James Center Atrium. Works will be on display from Nov. 9-14.

Students also are coordinating Founders Day activities: Founder’s Day Ball in the University Students Commons Commonwealth Ballroom on Nov. 6, at 7 p.m.; and on Nov. 2, a performance highlighting "Dance Through the Ages," in the Business Building Auditorium, 14 N. Linden St., time to be announced.
