VCU’s Year of Freedom invites students, employees and families to participate in the Future of Richmond’s Past Civil War and Emancipation Day on Saturday, April 6, from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Participants will get free admission to more than 25 sites including museums, canal rides, performances and tours.
VCU RamRide will offer free shuttle service on a loop that takes riders to 25 participating sites. Pick up the shuttle in Monroe Park at two bus stops. The buses will have “Civil War Day” on the marquee. Follow the shuttle's location; shuttles will appear as blue tracking dots on the website map.
Participants will learn about the 1863 Richmond Bread Riot, President Lincoln’s visit to Richmond in 1865, Union spy Mary Bowser and much more.
“VCU is surrounded by many historic and cultural venues that many at the university may not be aware of and so April 6th is a day that provides the VCU community with an opportunity to become acquainted with these wonderful institutions and their programs -- for free,” said Cathy Howard, vice provost, Division of Community Engagement. “If we can encourage hundreds from VCU to participate in the day, I believe they will return to many of these venues in the future and maybe encourage their neighbors and out-of-town guests to do so, contributing to the well-being of these institutions, and, in turn, the cultural vitality of our region.”
The Future of Richmond’s Past is supported by: The Dominion Foundation; Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce; Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond; McGuireWoods, LLC; MeadWestvaco; National Park Service/Richmond National Battlefield Park; James E. Ukrop; University of Richmond; Venture Richmond; Virginia Commonwealth University; and
Virginia Union University.
