In observance of National Oral Cancer Awareness Month, VCU Dental Care will host free oral, head and neck cancer screenings on Saturday, April 25, at 520 N. 12th St. from 9 a.m. to1 p.m.
Oral cancer affects approximately 42,000 Americans each year and is responsible for 8,000 deaths annually. The Oral Cancer Foundation reports that the death rate for oral cancer is greater than that of several other cancers such as cervical, testicular and thyroid cancers. Difficulty in diagnoses and late-stage discovery contribute to the higher death rates associated with the disease. Common causes include tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption and HPV.
Routine oral examination by a dental professional can help detect cancer early, and early detection remains the best method of prevention.
